My name is Preston Rattle and I am a current student at the University of Oregon. Almost two years ago, I studied abroad in Lyon, France for the entire year. I left In August 2013 and returned August 2014. Living in Lyon was a life altering opportunity, providing me with skills, experiences, and relationships that I would've never had otherwise. This is my chance to share a bit of what I encountered.
*Side Note* All photos you see on this website I actually took (or someone I was with took them), and are not from any other source!
Where it all started! The second or third largest city in France (depending upon city limits; the second largest city is either Lyon or Marseille), Lyon is one of the cultural centers of Europe and is also considered the gastronomical capital of France. Needless to say, I gained more than a couple pounds eating some of the best food I have ever had and the only regret I had was that I could not eat more of it.
Northwestern France is a gorgeous place, reminiscent of the Pacific Northwest in many ways but with an unmistakably French twist. La Bretagne, or Brittany as it is known in English, has a unique history with the villages, cities, and nature all playing a part in the magical aspect that permeates throughout the region. Undoubtedly, the most well-known landmark is Mont St. Michel, an almost fantasy-like hill surrounded by the tide with a cathedral at its summit.
The French Alps are absolutely magnificent, especially for someone such as myself who is not used to seeing so many large mountains in close proximity to each other. Coming from Mt. Hood, les Alpes are an incredible place for winter sport and relaxation. Anyone who enjoys snow, altitude, natural beauty, or all of the above would have an incredible time in the Alps.
A region with an prestigious reputation for all the reasons that one would expect. La Provence and all parts of the south live up to their reputation as a true jewel of the world. Whether it's the fields of lavender, the Gorge du Verdon, or the Mediterranean sea, falling in love with Southern France is inevitable.
Besides France, I visited 11 other countries during my time abroad. The other countries I visited were, in no particular order: Switzerland, Spain, Holland, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria, Andorra, Vatican City, & Monaco. All of them had something special and unique which made my journey even more special. I hope you get a chance to visit all of these places and many more!
